Well, I finished the second sleeve of Mr. Penney’s sweater.

Mr. Penney’s sleeve

(Your eyes aren’t fooling you. That is the same picture from the last post. But the second sleeve looks just like it, which is the point, anyway.)

I had started the sleeves, originally planning on them to be one solid color. When I realized that the original design was not going to work, as I would not have enough of the main color to do both sleeves and the back as solid, the design changed to the current state.

Now here is the thing, I just centered the diamonds on the sleeve without much though about how the diamonds would meet that the armscye. Uh oh.

Well, last night, I actually sat down with Ann Budd’s book to see how much of an alteration I am going to have to make from her pattern to get the diamonds to work out properly. According to her book, I need 110 stitches. The stitch repeat for the diamonds is 16 stitches. The sleeve is 93 stitches wide where it meets the body. (I had to add a stitch to the sleeve so that the diamonds would truly be centered.)

93 + 16 = 109

Close enough. I really got lucky on this one, as in my fervor to get this sweater underway, I totally skipped this detail.

Happy Dance!

  1. I’m glad to hear that your calculations worked out so nicely. Will you be starting the back or front over the weekend? I have Ann Budd’s book, too, seeing your sweater makes me want to take a look at it soon.

  2. It’s so nice when arithmetic acrobatics aren’t required.
